![]() ![]() If I play a B on the trumpet, someone with Perfect Pitch would hear an A, probably name it as an A and it would do my head in. Perfect Pitch is where I play a Concert A on the piano (key of C) and I can name it as an A. Ear training is important for relative pitch but not perfect pitch. People with perfect pitch must get get stuffed up. ![]() Think of the poor buggers who play triple French Horn where they can play in F, Bb and Eb or a double Tenor Trombone which reads in F or Bb. I am guessing, but I think there are more transposing instruments than non-transposing. Transposing is not a big deal and if you stuff around now, you will make it harder later. Musicology will teach you to transpose, apps will transpose for you, band music will be written in the key you need(ie a C instrument will play a written A and you will play a written B and they will sound the same. Unless you have perfect pitch it really is a non issue. Is it a minor inconvenience? Sure, I suppose. It's only a big deal if you make it a big deal. ![]() Sometimes singers take things down a step or two. Saxophones, Clarinets, Horns / French Horn, English Horn, and so forth. I've heard this complaint for years from various student who learned piano or violin or something before picking up trumpet.Īll kinds of instruments don't play in concert pitch - for various reasons. These are the same pitch, yes? It's a "C" AND a "Concert Bb". Is that hard to conceptualize? Not really.įor example, the low open pitch on a Bb trumpet is written a "C." However, it's a concert Bb on your piano. So, it's a Car, it's a Rav 4, it's a Toyota, and it's an SUV. Does it have 4 doors? Is it an SUV? A sedan? A truck. Perhaps you or your parents have a vehicle. You just need to realize that every pitch can be called a few different things. There isn't a "real note" vs not real note. Overall, the best thing is to change your mindset about it. ![]() This was covered in a previous post a few weeks ago. ![]()
